Purpose and background
The Craig D. Butler Scholarship Foundation was created to honor Craig D. Butler’s life and to carry forward his legacy of integrity, generosity, and service. The scholarship supports young people from underserved communities who are pursuing postsecondary education, particularly those working to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of gun violence. Each year the Foundation offers financial assistance to graduating high school seniors as they take the next step toward their educational goals.
Award details
This is an annual, merit-based competition that also emphasizes philanthropic values and community-minded leadership in applicants. The Foundation grants a one-time scholarship award of $1,000. While financial need is taken into account, all graduating high school seniors who meet the criteria are invited to apply.
Eligibility requirements
To be considered, applicants must meet all of the following:
- Be a resident of Pennsylvania or Camden County, New Jersey at the time of application, or be enrolled in a high school located in Pennsylvania or Camden County, NJ.
- Identify as African American.
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Plan to enroll as a full-time freshman in the fall of the award year at a two- or four-year college or university, OR plan to enroll full time in an accredited vocational-technical program in the fall of the award year.
- Submit a completed application along with all required supporting documents.
Disbursement of funds
Scholarship funds will be issued directly to the recipient’s educational institution. A confirmation letter or enrollment verification from the college, university, or vocational-technical school will be required to process payment.
