Diane Dawson Memorial Scholarship

Overview
The Diane Dawson Memorial Scholarship was created in 2003 to honor the memory of Gail Diane Dawson. The award offers financial support to young men and women who either have a parent or legal guardian living with a terminal illness (including terminal cancer) or who experienced the death of a parent from a terminal disease while they were enrolled in high school. The scholarship serves students in the greater Denver area and the Sacramento region. Thanks to the efforts of Diane’s family and friends, her enthusiasm for life, community service, and devotion to education is carried forward through this fund.
Who may apply (Eligibility)
- Graduating high school seniors who attend school in the greater Denver area or in the Sacramento region (counties: El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, Yolo)
- Applicants who have a parent or legal guardian diagnosed with a terminal illness (including terminal cancer), or who lost a parent to a terminal disease during their time in high school
- Minimum cumulative GPA: 2.5
- Demonstrated financial need
Required supporting materials / Supplemental questions
1. Medical verification of the parent’s/guardian’s illness or death: provide either a death certificate or a letter from the attending physician. Medical reports will not be accepted.
2. Confirmation that you are a graduating senior from a high school within the Denver area or the Sacramento region.
3. Confirmation that you have (a) a parent or legal guardian with a terminal cancer or other terminal illness, or (b) experienced the loss of a parent to a terminal disease while enrolled in high school.
4. Two letters of recommendation from individuals who are not related to you.
5. (Part of #4) The second, separate letter of recommendation.
6. Essay: a one-page self-evaluation written by the applicant.
