Introduction
Broder Orland Murray & DeMattie LLC recognizes that choosing a career in family law is often driven by compassion and a commitment to helping people through difficult personal circumstances. The Future in Family Law Scholarship is intended to support committed current or prospective law students who plan to build careers in family law and serve families in need. One $1,000 award will be given to the applicant who submits the most thoughtful response to the essay prompt below, describing the inspiration and path that led them to pursue family law.
Who may apply (Eligibility)
- Open to current or future law students who are legal residents of the United States and live in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia.
- Employees of Broder Orland Murray & DeMattie LLC, their immediate family members (parent, child, sibling, spouse), and anyone sharing a household with such employees (related or not) are ineligible.
- Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and be in good academic standing.
Application requirements
To enter, applicants must submit the following:
1. A completed application form providing all requested information.
2. A 500–750 word essay responding to this prompt: Describe what motivated you to pursue a career in family law. Was there a specific moment, experience, or mentor who influenced your decision? How did you evaluate your options and ultimately choose this specialty? Focus on the journey and factors that shaped your choice.
- All essays will be screened for AI-generated content. Applications with essays found to contain AI writing will be disqualified.
3. A professional résumé detailing academic and work experience.
4. Academic transcripts:
- Current students should submit a transcript from their present institution.
- First-year college students, graduate students, or recent transfers may provide an unofficial transcript from their current school plus the most recent official transcript from their prior institution.
- High school applicants may submit documentation of acceptance to a college or university in place of a college transcript.
Selection, award, and preference
- The most compelling submission will receive a $1,000 scholarship to support the recipient’s legal education.
- Preference will be given to applicants who are from, or who attend secondary school in, the state.

- Ensure all materials are complete and truthful. Incomplete applications or submissions that fail the AI-authenticity check will not be considered.
