Program Overview
The Junior Science & Humanities Symposium (JSHS) recognizes outstanding high school research at Regional and National Symposia. Federal sponsors include the U.S. Office of the Secretary of War and the Departments of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, which support undergraduate tuition scholarships and cash awards for finalists. Awards are intended for U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) who advance as Regional or National finalists. Scholarship disbursement is subject to JSHS scholarship conditions.
Description: JSHS honors student research through competitive Regional and National symposia, awarding tuition scholarships and cash prizes to top finalists.
Eligibility: Awards are available to finalists who are U.S. citizens or Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR).

Regional Finalists' Awards
Each JSHS region disburses a total of $4,500 in undergraduate tuition scholarships to the top three Regional finalists. These scholarships are allocated to recognize the highest-ranking student research presentations at Regional Symposia. Scholarship funds are payable in accordance with JSHS scholarship conditions. Region-level awards serve as the entry pathway to the National Symposium competition.
Award Value: A total of $4,500 is distributed per region among the top three finalists.
- 1st Place: $2,000
- 2nd Place: $1,500
- 3rd Place: $1,000
- Regional awards recognize top student research within each region.
- Funds are tuition scholarships intended for college matriculation.

National Finalists' Awards
The National Symposium presents tuition scholarships to top oral research finalists across eight subject categories, and cash awards for poster competition finalists in the same categories. A combined total of $192,000 in undergraduate tuition scholarships is allocated to the top three oral finalists in each category. Poster competition finalists receive designated cash awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each category. These awards recognize outstanding national-level student research and support continued undergraduate study.
Award Value (Oral Competition): The top three oral finalists in each of eight subject categories receive tuition scholarships totaling $192,000: $12,000 for 1st place, $8,000 for 2nd place, and $4,000 for 3rd place per category.
Award Value (Poster Competition): The top three poster finalists in each of eight subject categories receive cash awards of $550 (1st), $450 (2nd), and $350 (3rd).
- Oral competition scholarships: 1st $12,000; 2nd $8,000; 3rd $4,000 per category.
- Poster competition cash awards per category: 1st $550; 2nd $450; 3rd $350.
- Scholarships are intended to support undergraduate tuition for finalists.
