Overview

The Ron Brown Scholarship honors the legacy of Ronald H. Brown by supporting academically talented, community-minded Black/African American students who demonstrate leadership and a commitment to service. The program awards a limited number of renewable four-year scholarships to high school seniors who also demonstrate financial need. Recipients may use the award at any accredited four-year college or university in the United States and may pursue any field of study. Selection emphasizes intellectual promise, civic engagement, entrepreneurship, and global citizenship aligned with Ron Brown’s mission.

Award Value: The program competitively awards 20 four-year scholarships of $40,000 each (paid as $10,000 per year), renewable for up to four years and applicable to tuition and related college expenses.

Eligibility

The Ron Brown Scholar Program requires applicants to meet specific demographic, academic, and service-oriented criteria. Applicants must be Black/African American, U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and current high school seniors at the time of application. Candidates should demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, sustained community service, and financial need. Current college students are not eligible to apply.

Reviewers include Ron Brown Scholar Program staff, former admissions officers, and external volunteers such as admissions professionals, business leaders, and retired executives. Finalists undergo interviews and conversations with alumni and the National Selection Committee before scholars are chosen.

January and February encompass layered review rounds and virtual interviews with semifinalists, while March includes finalist notifications, virtual alumni conversations, and in-person finalist interviews in Washington, D.C. After final evaluations, Ron Brown Scholars and Ron Brown Captains are notified.
