Introduction Founded in 1955 through a trust established by the late Aubrey Lee Brooks, the Aubrey Lee Brooks Scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors from a 14-county region of North Carolina. Central administration of the Brooks Foundation scholarship program is handled by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority.
Eligibility
- Be a graduating high school senior and a permanent resident of one of the following North Carolina counties: Alamance, Bertie, Caswell, Durham, Forsyth, Granville, Guilford, Orange, Person, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Swain, or Warren.
- Intend to enroll for the first time as a full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate at one of these institutions: North Carolina State University, UNC–Chapel Hill, or UNC–Greensboro.
- Demonstrate financial need as determined through the application process; the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Student Aid Index (SAI) must not exceed $12,000.
- Complete residency verification through the North Carolina Residency Determination Service website.
Application requirements
- Submit the completed Aubrey Lee Brooks Scholarship application electronically.
- Provide an electronic academic transcript showing final grades for the most recent fall semester.
- Upload electronic copies of SAT and/or ACT score report(s).
- File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the applicable academic year.
Additional information
- Seventeen scholarships are awarded in total. Of these, one scholarship is set aside for a student from the Greensboro/High Point area and another is reserved for a senior at the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics who is from an eligible county.
- Selection also considers merit, leadership, character, and a commitment to preparing for a career as a useful and informed citizen.
- Brooks Scholars may be eligible for extra support for activities such as summer internships, research projects, or study/travel abroad, as well as a one-time computer stipend of $2,500.
- Awards are renewable provided the recipient continues to demonstrate financial need, remains enrolled full-time at an eligible institution, maintains a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75, and demonstrates good citizenship.
