Overview The Morton B. Duggan, Jr. Memorial Education Recognition Award is presented to a student enrolled in an accredited respiratory care education program. Applicants from any U.S. state are welcome, but preference will be given to candidates who reside in Georgia or South Carolina. The American Respiratory Care Foundation (ARCF) may grant up to $1,000 in memory of Morton B. Duggan, Jr. The award package includes a certificate of recognition, coach-class airfare, one night’s hotel accommodations, and registration to AARC Congress.
Eligibility
- Current enrollment in an accredited respiratory care training program is required.
- Candidates may apply from any state; however, applicants from Georgia and South Carolina are prioritized.
Award Details
- Maximum award amount: $1,000.
- Award components: certificate, coach airfare, one night’s lodging, and AARC Congress registration.
Required Materials All of the following must be submitted for an application to be considered:
- Completed application form.
- Proof of enrollment in an accredited respiratory care program.
- Official academic transcript demonstrating a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
- An original, referenced paper on a topic related to respiratory care. The paper must have a cover page that lists only the paper’s title and must not contain any identifying information (name, address, school, etc.) to ensure an unbiased review.
- Two letters of recommendation:
- One from the program director or another senior faculty member.
- One from the medical director or a physician instructor. Each letter must address: (a) approval of the candidate’s submitted paper, (b) the candidate’s suitability for the award, and (c) the candidate’s potential for a career in respiratory care.
Paper Submission Requirements
- Undergraduate applicants must attach the original referenced paper to the online application form. The cover page should include only the paper title and must omit any identifying details.
- The ARCF accepts submissions in three primary formats: literature reviews, limited clinical investigations, and essays. Presentation and expectations vary between these categories—consult the online instructions for specific formatting and content requirements.
- The ARCF provides guidance to help both novice and experienced writers focus topics, structure manuscripts, locate references and appropriate statistical methods, and correctly cite scientific literature. See the Paper Submission Guidelines online for full details.
Application Period and Deadlines
- Applications are accepted beginning January 1, with the deadline on June 1.
- Applications will not be reviewed unless all required supporting documents have been received by the deadline.
Previous Recipients
- Former undergraduate award winners may submit another application.
- Former postgraduate award winners may apply again and may receive the award for a second and third year provided they remain in good standing in their advanced degree program and are judged by the Board of Trustees or its designated selection committee to be the most deserving candidate.
Notes
- Review the online guidance for specific submission instructions and formatting requirements before submitting.
- Ensure anonymity of the paper to avoid any bias during evaluation.
