The Scholarship Program was initiated in 1993 with the formation of the Scholarship Trail Ride Committee. The primary objective was to raise funds for scholarships to be awarded to graduating high school seniors. In addition to the funds generated from the Scholarship Trail Ride, 5% of the proceeds from the Livestock and Homemaking Auctions at the Fair are allocated to the Scholarship fund. Since its inception in 1993, the program has awarded over $2 million in college scholarships. The number of scholarships awarded is determined annually by MCFA. For instance, in 2018, 50 scholarships totaling $125,000 were awarded. Eligibility for the scholarship extends to six public school districts within Montgomery County, encompassing 12 senior high schools. These include Caney Creek, Conroe, Magnolia, Magnolia West, Montgomery, New Caney, Oak Ridge, Porter, Splendora, Willis, The Woodlands, and The Woodlands College Park. Alternatively, students attending a private, parochial, or specialized school in Montgomery County are also eligible. Furthermore, students residing in Montgomery County (defined as living with parents, a parent, or legal guardian and sleeping in Montgomery County five or more nights each week) are eligible, even if they attend a public school outside Montgomery County due to district boundaries, or if they attend a parochial, private, or specialized school outside the county. The criteria for the scholarship include academic standing (applicants must be in the top quarter of their graduating class), a minimum SAT score of 900 or ACT score of 20, and an unrestricted major field. Applicants must be set to graduate high school at the end of the spring semester of the award or be a midterm graduate at the time of application. Other factors considered include leadership, citizenship, and extracurricular activities. Please note that participation in 4-H or FFA is not a requirement.
