Overview

STLE administers three academic awards through its Presidential Awards Program to support students pursuing tribology or lubrication engineering. The program comprises the E. Richard Booser Scholarship for undergraduates, the Elmer E. Klaus Fellowship for graduate students, and the Jeanie S. McCoy Scholarship for female students. The awards fund research projects that encourage advanced study or careers in the field and are managed by the STLE Presidential Council. These awards have supported career opportunities in tribology since their inception.

History of the Award: Since 1995, STLE has awarded a total of $182,000 to more than 40 recipients to subsidize research and promote careers in tribology and lubrication engineering.

  • Three distinct awards target undergraduates, graduates, and women in the field.
  • Funds are intended to subsidize research projects relevant to tribology.
  • Administered by the STLE Presidential Council to foster career development.

Selection Process

The selection process evaluates applications and supporting documentation submitted by applicants. All complete applications received before the deadline are reviewed by a designated selection committee. Decisions are communicated to all applicants, including scholarship and fellowship recipients, after the review is complete. The committee assesses each submission against the award-specific criteria.

Description: Applicants are judged on application materials and supporting documents; every timely application is reviewed by the committee and applicants are notified of the outcome upon completion of the review.

  • Evaluation is based on submitted materials and documentation.
  • All timely applications are reviewed by a selection committee.
  • Applicants receive notification after the committee completes its review.

E. Richard Booser Scholarship

The E. Richard Booser Scholarship supports undergraduate students who wish to pursue graduate study or a career in tribology by providing hands-on research opportunities. Eligible students must be enrolled in an engineering or science program and propose research relevant to tribology. Selection emphasizes a faculty recommendation, the relevance of the proposed research, and the overall quality of the research experience. The scholarship aims to stimulate continued study and professional interest in the field.

Eligibility: Students who previously received the McCoy award may apply if the proposed research is substantially different; students may not receive multiple Booser awards.

Award Value: $4,500 awarded to the selected student.

  • For undergraduate engineering or science students focused on tribology research.
  • Selection requires a faculty recommendation and a strong research proposal.
  • $4,500 award; prior McCoy recipients can apply with substantially different research.

Elmer E. Klaus Fellowship

The Elmer E. Klaus Fellowship is designed to advance graduate students’ research and career paths in tribology. Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate engineering or science program at the time research begins. Selection criteria include a faculty recommendation, relevance to tribology, and the quality of the proposed research experience. The fellowship provides direct support to facilitate graduate-level research activities.

Eligibility: Graduate students who previously received Booser or McCoy awards as undergraduates may apply if their proposed research is substantially different; students may not receive multiple Klaus awards.

Award Value: $5,500 awarded to the selected student.

  • Intended for graduate students conducting tribology-related research.
  • Requires enrollment in a graduate engineering or science program when research starts.
  • $5,500 fellowship; prior undergraduate awardees may apply with distinct research.

Jeanie S. McCoy Scholarship

The Jeanie S. McCoy Scholarship recognizes a deserving woman pursuing education and a career in tribology. Applicants may be undergraduate or graduate female students studying engineering or science fields applicable to tribology careers. Selection is based on the quality of a submitted essay (for potential publication in TLT magazine), a faculty recommendation, and extracurricular activities that demonstrate commitment to the field. The scholarship seeks to increase female participation and visibility in tribology.

Eligibility: Students who previously received the Booser award are eligible if the research is substantially different; students who have won the Klaus award are not eligible for the McCoy award; recipients may not receive multiple McCoy awards.

Award Value: $5,000 awarded to the selected student.

  • For female undergraduate or graduate students in engineering or science relevant to tribology.
  • Selection factors include an essay, faculty recommendation, and extracurricular involvement.
  • $5,000 scholarship; certain prior award combinations affect eligibility.
